Snow Cap Beans

The Snow Cap Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is a pole bean and a relative of the cranberry bean. This attractive heirloom-variety bean gets its name from the ivory-colored “cap of snow” that covers about half of its 1/2-inch-long reddish-tan body, which is marked with variegated streaks of deep red.

The names native people gave all-natural beans tell a story. With Snow Cap, we can easily imagine people living in the valley and looking up at the high mountains capped in snow! It’s a beautiful image and a beautiful bean with the tan and white coloration and cooks BIG to offer a soft, delicate bite and filled with great flavor. Excellent in soups or salads or in a big aromatic and delicious pot of beans.

Re-hydrate in clear, cool water for 12-24 hours before cooking until tender. These big beans need plenty of time to absorb and expand, so give them at least a full day.

Now, let’s look at how the necklace and bracelet were created:

The first task is to drill holes in the beans so you can string them together to make a necklace or a bracelet. A hand-dandy little battery-operated Dremel drill will do the trick. Be sure to get a drill bit small enough for a stringing wire or memory wire.

John fixed me with a little block of wood to put under the bean as I’m drilling. This ensures that the drill bit goes all the way through the bean. Some beans can be pretty tough!

These little dog food containers are handy to have around. here we have the drilled beans in the clear container and the spacer beads in the dog food container.

Picking out the spacer bead you want to use can mean a lot of experimenting. I finally decided on these adobe colored beads because they were the closest to brown in the beans.





The wooden disc for the pendant was just the right color.
